The word aphelion is understood to be the point in the orbit of the earth when it is furthest away from the sun. The seasons are not caused by the distance the earth is from the sun but by the tilt of the earth's axis. It is winter in the part of the earth that is tilted away from the sun and summer in the part of the earth that is tilted towards the sun. The warm summer temperatures will occur in New York State because the part of the earth where New York State sits is tilted towards the sun. If the earth was not tilted towards or away from the sun, the temperatures on all parts of the earth would be similar. They would differ by no more than one or two degrees.
