The hunger I had known before this had been no grim, hostile stranger; it had been a normal hunger that had made me beg constantly for bread, and when I ate a crust or two I was satisfied. The narrator describes the previous hunger as “no grim” he was not worried before when he felt that hunger, was something normal that makes him beg for bread and was easily satisfied with a couple of crust, however this new sensation of hunger was a strange experience something new, different than before and it confused him and made him feel angry.
