The origins of Chechnya as an autonomous territory can be traced back to 1920 when the Bolshevik revolutionaries created the new terriroty. Orignally, it only encompassed Chechens, however, in 1934 under the direction of Joseph Stalin the autonomous territories grew to include the Ingush region, creating the Chechen-Ingush autonomous territory.
