The violence has declined in Northern Ireland because terrorist organizations have laid down their weapons and signed peace agreements with the various British governments in the 1990s. In the 2000s, violence has diminished. Only small extremist groups and drug traffickers continued terrorist attacks. Today, violence has almost disappeared, but tensions between communities still exist.
The conflict between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland was an old conflict. It was the result of religious tensions between Catholics in the North and Protestants in the South. The deadliest periods were between the early 1960s and the late 1980s.
A lot of attacks had been carried out by an armed group in Northern Ireland called IRA, the Irish Republican Army, which has attempted several times to assassinate British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and many other politicians.
Today, this organization has made peace with England. They had already stopped the fight in 1994 after British Prime Minister John Major granted Northern Ireland the right to self-determination.
