Peter Zenger was a German immigrant living in New York and running a newspaper. He wrote a critique of the colonial governor. Zenger was arrested because he wrote opposition of the government.
In the trial, Alexander Hamilton defended Peter Zenger. He argued that the press offered a check on a corrupt to prevent corruption. The press belonged to the people and were meant to reveal the policies of the government. Hamilton argued a not guilty verdict and laid the foundation for the First Amendment.
