We know that Mini was a chatty child and although at first she feared the Kabuliwallah, she quickly made friends with him. They had a child-like banter that made Mini laugh with delight, something her father felt was strange for a man. We later learn that the Kabuliwallah had a daughter back in his own country. This relationship is quickly forgotten while the Kabuliwallah is in jail and when he returns, he realizes it will never be the same again and that is own daughter is older now as well.
