Once a person has hurt another, he will be more likely to hurt the person again. This explanation is contrary to the idea of catharsis. The theory of catharsis, originated by Sigmund Freud, is the idea that once an individual has expelled anger whether that be on an object or on a person, the anger will be gone from their body and not to return. Dissonance reduction theory actually states the opposite, that this anger is likely to reoccur after the initial action of violence.
