The US government has spent billions and billions of dollars pushing so called "green" projects because they would supposedly be more ecologically friendly.

Turns out that so far most of them have been utter financial failures and some have even been worse ecologically than were the things they were supposed to replace.

The United States developed the Environmental Protection Agency in order to regulate things like resource usage and pollution. The agency was a concentrated effort to enforce laws that would decrease needless consumption of natural resources and decrease their effects on the environment. The EPA has created regulations for corporations and organizations limiting them to a certain amount of emissions or limiting the ways they can dispose of waste. The EPA puts a greater pressure on companies to be environmentally conscious and decreases the amount of US waste emissions.
