The answer is loudness. This is an attribute of sound that
is effortlessly quantified. It is associated to the amplitude of the pressure swinging
in a sound wave. Our awareness spreads over such a comprehensive variety of
amplitudes that we use a logarithmic scale. Sound pressure levels which
are straight connected to the amplitude of sound waves.
