A floating quotation occurs when there is no clear connection from the original writing to the quotation. For example: I love my dog. "97% of dog owners love their pets." She is a great dog. This quotation has no information that ties it to the rest of the sentences. There should never be a period before opening quotation marks. To fix this, the author must introduce the source and provide context. For example: I love my dog. According to Anony Mous from Made Up, "97% of dog owners love their pets." Now if you're quote is more sophisticated than mine, you may need more information. For example: Before Johnny died in The Outsiders he gave Ponyboy one last piece of advice, he said, "Stay Gold." This tells us who is speaking and what is happening when he says the line.
