A minimum of 8.5 million African captives was transported to America during the transatlantic slave trade. From 1440–1640, the Portuguese slavers had a monopoly on the slaves export from Africa. It was in the 18th century where 6 million Africans were carried by the slave trade, while British slavers transported 2.5 million.
