Greeks adopted mystery religions and this religion was dominated by fate. Because of this, we can see many Greek myths that try to alter fate even if they know this cannot work. Greek believed that humans - mortal or immortal - cannot change prescribed outcomes from three fates: sisters Clotho - the thread of life -, Lachesis - assigns each person’s destiny - and, Atropos - the one who carries the scissors to snip the thread of life (death).
This way, Greeks believed that nothing could be done to alter or to prolong the destiny of one’s life, regardless of any preparations of precautions. This can be seen easily on Edipus.
