Cuneiform is a system of writing that was developed by the Sumerians in about the about 6,000 years ago.
It was used to communicate and record various things such as:
Record sales and transactions between traders
Maintain accounts and record taxes
Communications between people
Records government proceedings and regulations
Relay information from government to to "the people"
Record historical events
Because Cuneiform was imprinted on clay tablets a great many (literally hundreds of thousands) have survived up to present time (unlike papyrus and parchment scrolls). This enables archaeologists to piece together historical events as well as the day-to-day life of an ancient culture.
