When a primary consumers eat the producers, part of the energy stored in the plants is transferred to the primary consumers. bout 10% of a producer's available energy is passed to the primary consumer, about 90% of energy is lost to the environment.
Since only 10%of energy is available to each subsequent consumer, the energy level becomes too low to be sufficient enough to sustain the consumers at the end of food chain. Hence, food chain rarely have more than 4 trophic levels.
