1900 Galveston Hurricane:
On September 8, 1900, a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph descended upon the barrier island of Galveston, Texas. The storm devastated the once-thriving coastal city.
Just before dark on that fateful day, the hurricane slammed into Galveston, causing widespread destruction. Buildings crumbled, and the city’s infrastructure suffered immense damage.
The storm’s impact was catastrophic, resulting in significant loss of life and property. It remains the deadliest natural disaster in American history.
Tropical Storm Danielle (1980):
On September 5, 1980, Tropical Storm Danielle made landfall near Galveston Bay as a weak tropical storm.
Although not as intense as the 1900 hurricane, Danielle caused severe and widespread flooding across Texas. Rainfall peaked at 18.29 inches in Nederland.
Sadly, one person lost their life due to the heavy rains associated with Danielle.
