I am unsure what exactly the question is here, but when approaching someone with depression in which is often withdrawn or grief-striken, asking them "Have you ever thought of suicide?" should not be taken lightly.  Instead, it is best to talk out some things draining them, while offering help in any way shape or form whether it be emotionally, mentally, or even physically.  Many people may show signs of depression, but could be suffering from other issues like family troubles, limited exposure to the sun (outdoors and socialization), or love and affection.  Comfort the friend and ask what you and they can do to overcome this once and for all, nevertheless together.  That is what friendship is after all.
