In 1883, it was the "railroad industry" that was responsible for creating the first system of time zones in the United States, since the introduction of rail travel meant that there needed to be a set table of departure and arrival times across the US.

Answer:

The first time zones in the US was created by the railroad industry. The need for time zones was felt the railroads spread over thousands of miles. During the 1880's most of the towns in the US had their local time. and these local times created scheduling problems for the railways. Hence the railroad companies agreed for a new time code system. They divided the continent into four time zones. The congress officially adopted the railroad time zone in 1918.
