It is unlikely that it an ant cannot make directions in the middle of the day because the day enables their eyes to polarize light which activates the ability of the ant to register to its brain every change in the ant’s path. This is an amazing feature since every change in path incurs change in the angles of light- which all remains in the ant's memory.
