The Pythagorean theorem is a squared plus b squared equals c squared. So 9 is a, 12 is b, and c is unknown. 9^2+12^2=c^2 (By the way if you didn't know this ^2 means squared. 81+144=c^2 225=c^2 15=c because 225 is a perfect square (It is 15 squared)
