There are two types of characterization; direct and indirect.
Direct is when the author or another character tells the reader the character's traits. Such as, "Sarah is quiet and friendly."
Indirect is when the author shows the reader the character's traits through their action, speech, thoughts/emotions, effect on others, and/or appearance.
In this case, this is an example of Indirect characterization (Effect on others) because Joad mentions how Ma liked this character and how Granma said "You was just full of spirit."
