If I were to draft legislation to protect our environment, one of the first things I would implement is a tax on oil profits to add to the already existing corporate tax rate, similar to Norway. I would also include a carbon tax so that manufacturers would be less inclined to use fossil fuels as they would have to pay a tax on that. Another regulation would be a ban on offshore fracking and artic drilling so that oil spills like the BP gulf wouldn't happen again. The Department of Energy and would enforce these new regulations on fracking and offshore drilling, as well as new investments towards green energy. The Department of Treasury would oversee enforcement of the new taxes that I listed earlier.
