In the 1930s, the Great Depression used to have a terrible impact on Americans all over the country. The number of unemployed persons was unusually high, and many people lacked the funds to cover their mortgages or rent. Many Americans became homeless as a result.

On the outskirts of cities, they started to create their own settlements, with houses made of cardboard, discarded wood, and metal. Residents of the these shanty towns referred to their neighborhoods as "Hoovervilles" because they felt that President Herbert Hoover still hadn't addressed their concerns or taken sufficient action to end the Great Depression.
There were several Hoovervilles in Ohio. Cleveland and Circleville in Ohio were where you might find the more well-known ones. c
