In this excerpt from the Reverend Jesse Jackson’s speech to the Democratic National Convention in 1988, Jackson develops an interesting “extended” metaphor. Although Jackson and Taylor are comparing different things, what are 2 similarities both the excerpt and the poem share?

“America’s not a blanket, woven from one thread, one color, one cloth. When I was a child growing up in Greenville, South Carolina, and Grandmother could not afford a blanket, she didn’t complain, and we did not freeze. Instead she took pieces of old cloth–patches, wool, silk, gabardine, crockersack on the patches–barely good enough to wipe off your shoes with. But they didn’t stay that way very long. Although Jackson and Taylor are comparing different things, the 2 similarities both the excerpt and the poem share are:

  • They compare America to a blanket in an offhand manner
  • They talk about how patience is key to turning around a difficult situation.

This is because, the country, America is compared to a blanket, even though it is offhand as it is said that a quilt should be built that should be strong and contain a symbol of beauty, power and culture,
