The protagonist of "Rules of the game" is called Meimei and is a Chinese-American girl of Chinese parents. Chinese culture is very present in her life and strongly influences her, however, having grown up in the USA, the American culture is also very strong in her life and this causes cultural shocks that influence the way she acts.
Under the influence of Chinese culture, Meimei is always in search of excellence, and her life is completely controlled by her mother. This makes her spend her whole life training to play chess perfectly and all this training is overseen by her mother.
However, the American culture encourages her to rebel, take control of her own life, and experience freedom, although she loves to play chess.
