The last words of Candide were, "we must cultivate our garden" through which Voltaire's conclusion about the rival philosophies of optimism and pessimism are indicated.
It is because it was Candide's last line telling us that we should focus and do the work which we can do/control better by not getting chained by the nature but cultivating this world and our lives by love. The word Candide mean a guideless person.
Voltaire emphasized in his work the importance of tolerance, especially religious tolerance. He believed that a progress in social life could be achieved by reasons and not by power/authority.
