They sought to gain critical resources and establish an international presence through imperialism, which also allowed them to gain political control

Imperialism contributed to the outbreak of the war because there were few locations/countries left to colonize, meaning that countries would be forced to compete for the few remaining colonies in order to expand.

It takes away from domestic issues to the economic gains made by nations gaining control of African lands.
