During the industrial revolution, Washington obtained a large portion of their wealth from the development of railroad companeis in their area. (there were around 3000 rail road lines in Washington).
This lead to rapid/exploisive development in the areas around the railroads. For this to happen They are forced to reshape the geography of their surrounding to accomodate the railroads. The money acquired by that industry is eventually invested back to other businesses that cause the growth of several cities surronding it.
