Passage
When Nintendo released the Wii video game system in 2006, the company knew it was breaking new
ground. Gamers suddenly had the option of using more than just traditional hand and finger movements
to control a game; by swinging the Wii remote with their shoulders and arms, players could slash swords,
hit golf balls, and reel in fish. This worked because the controller contained an instrument that detected
vibrations and measured acceleration, and short-range wireless technology that sends information to the
game console. What Nintendo did not predict was that some people would find a way to reprogram the
game controller so that it would communicate with and run other types of electrical devices-televisions,
stereos, even vacuum cleaners!
