1. Those who weren’t abolitionist wanted to keep slavery because they benefitted from it. Morally, most rejected it because they knew deep down it was a bad thing. There were clearly divided parties which has to do with the sectionalism between the north and south.
2. In 1849, Californians sought statehood and, after heated debate in the U.S. Congress arising out of the slavery issue, California entered the Union as a free, nonslavery state by the Compromise of 1850. California became the 31st state on September 9, 1850.
