Why is Jing-mei able to get away with making a lot of mistakes on the piano?

i don't think that she really got away with making a lot of mistakes on the piano  because .. she was really stubborn and always making her mother disappointed in her.

The answer is:

Jing-mei did not care about getting good at playing the piano, because she was playing the piano just to please her mother.
