At dinner, the number of quarts of water the restaurant sells is 36 fewer than twice as many as it sells at lunch. The restaurant sells 144 quarts of water at lunch and dinner combined. How many quarts of water does the restaurant sell at lunch?

Let x be the number of quarts of water it sells at lunch

Dinner = 2x - 36

Lunch = 2x

2x + 2x - 36 = 4x - 36

4x - 36 = 144

144 - 36 = 4x

4x = 108

x = 108 divided by 4 = 27

2x = 27 x 2 = 54

The restaurant sells 54 quarts of water at lunch.
