What is the theme of The broken heart?

The most obvious themes in 'The Broken Heart' are love and loss/suffering. From the start, the speaker connects these two concepts. Love, he believes, cannot exist apart from sorrow; the two are inextricably linked.

Love is such a strong force that it has the ability to take over the heart in ways that nothing else can. It can create so much sadness that one's heart fractures into fragments that can never be put back together again.
