so, all you have to do here is multiply your denominator by the number out front, then add it to your numerator, and set it over your denominator. i know it sounds confusing, but it's a quick process:

-2 3/10

to get your improper fraction:

-2 * 10 = -20
-20 + 3 = -17

then you set -17 over the bottom of your original fraction:
-17/10

it's sort of a weird process and there is some mathematical reasoning behind why exactly you take those steps, but it's best to just remember to multiply the bottom and "big" number out front, then add the top and keep your same denominator.
