When the Spaniards came to the New World, they were intent on finding riches to send back home. They were also determined to establish a new commonwealth of Spain in the New World (New Spain). They succeeded in finding riches which they sent back to Spain, but they needed to build a strong, fortified new empire. In order to do so, they took land from the indigenous people living in the region. They not only stole their lands, but also enslaved the people, forcing them into marriage to produce heirs, and also forcing them into slavery to be servants/slaves or to work in the fields or build their buildings. Many died rather quickly due to the diseases the Europeans carried, to which they had no immunity. One of the empires they killed off was the once mighty Aztec Empire.
