A food chain shows the transfer of energy and nutrients from organisms to organisms in a feeding pathway.

Each step along a feeding pathway is known as a trophic or feeding level.

This feeding pathway in nature follows a certain pattern:

  • It starts with a primary producer( the grass).
  • the primary producer is eaten by a primary consumer (example, the zebra);
  • the primary consumer is eaten by a secondary consumer (example, the lion);
  • decomposers converts the remains of dead  producers and consumers.

At every trophic level, some of useful energy is lost as heat energy. Thus as we move along the food chain, the amount of useful energy decreases progressively.
