probably theme. Because, if you have a story, it doesn't really mean a lot until you figure out the theme. Love and compassion, hatred, etc. hope this helps!!

Answer:

There are a variety of literary devices.

Each have to be applied correctly to achieve it's intended effect. One literary element which can be used by an author to provide deeper meaning to a story is Symbolism.

When an emblem is used to signify ideas and qualities, by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense this is known as Symbolism.  Generally, it is an object representing another, to give an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant.

For example:

  1. A broken mirror may symbolize separation
  2. A red rose, or the color red, may stand for love or romance.

Used in sentences they come out like this:

  • Tears welled in my eyes as I looked at the broken mirror which once reflected the happy family that he had come from.
  • Unsure of how to communicate that he was the secret admirer who had written all these love letters over a space of 5 years, he gave her a red rose with a card bearing the same signature he had signed on the letters.

Cheers!
