The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, is considered to be the successor and continuation of the Holy Roman Empire, the Capital of Constantinople, is held around 1000 years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The size of the empire gradually declined in time, under the invasion of the conqueror, in order finally to 1453. Byzantium fell under the rule of the Turks.  But, one or two centuries before the final fall, the power of the empire has already weakened and the empire was divided into several small rival states.
