Answer: Jews were attracted to Eastern Europe because they could practice Judaism there without persecution.

During the late Middle Ages, the Black Death devastated Europe. Jews were made scapegoats for this event, and accused of deliberately poisoning wells. Jewish communities were destroyed all over Europe. Shortly after, in 1492, the Jews were expelled from Spain. This was similar to other expulsions in Austria, Hungary and Germany. To escape the prosecution, many Jews fled to Eastern Europe, particularly Poland. Poland was more accepting of religious differences and it became the cultural and spiritual centre of European Jews.
