After the war between Mexico and United States, there was a rising tension in some eastern and south-eastern states in USA regarding the status of slavery. The reason, after the Treaty of Cahuenga, United States pledged to pay 15 million dollars and the expenses of the damage that was caused in Mexican territory. Also, United States agreed to free the prisoners in both sides of the new border. As per the Treaty, United States obtained the territories of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico.

Mexico resigned to almost half of its territory then. On the other hand, abolicionists of the North and the slaveholders in south United States had strong disagreements about the status of the slaves. Mississippians and other tribes were really upset because of their compromised position.

This tension between abolitionists and slaveholders was one of the causes of the Civil War in the United States.
