Roosevelt and Taft were both running for president against Woodrow Wilson.  Roosevelt split from the Republican party to create the Bull Moose Party leaving Taft as the official Republican canidate.  Because of this the Republican vote was split between Roosevelt and Taft.  This lead to Woodrow Wilson's overwhelming victory.
