Basically the military came from the plebs which made up the majority of the population. They often could not become a patrician (Politic) as that it like nobility, must be born into it. The patricians would often use the military for their own gains and, if rich enough, could have their own army. However this is where it gets interesting. If the plebs didn't like the laws then they would rebel, as they did on multiple occasions. The patricians knew that they need the army but that the army knew that they didn't need them. They were unwilling to give full power so they made compromises. OPPERTUNITY FOR CORRUPTION!!!!!
