I'm not American but I'll try. Basically the American dream states that anyone, not matter the heritage or starting point, if you work hard enough then you get rich and become successful. This concept is basically a massive fib as seen in The Great Gatsby. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. People were confined by social class and anyone that often raised through the ranks of society did it illegally (Bootlegging and Gatsby again) and were not accepted by those who already had generations worth of money.
