even though the democratic candidate lost, the southern states achieved the ridding of the reconstructionists from their states. after the Civil War, one of the conditions of surrender was that the south would allow officials of the Union to over see rebuilding of the southern states. these officials were known as, reconstructionists, and they were Republicans. the south was largely democrats, there were many tensions, to be sure, southerners didn't welcome these officials, gave them the moniker, carpetbaggers. southerners were very resentful of the reconstructionists. this is known as the compromise of 1877. the south ceded the results of the election, in Hayes' favour, in exchange for the removal of federal troops in their states.

so, while Hayes was named the winner of the election, a republican, the democrats got their states' powers back.
