The increasing demand for goods during the Renaissance period led to the profits for traders. Compass, gun powder and other material reached Europe through this silk road.

Silk Road caravans used pack animals such as camels as they were able to travel in desert regions and horses. With no authority to provide maintenance, the roads were poor condition. Robbers were common. Trading posts or towns lay at regular distances of the Silk Road. Travellers inns set up known as caravansaries, where the traders (caravans) could take rest at night, and resupply their food. To protect themselves, traders joined together to travel long distances.
