Impact of Setting:

The setting created the mood and set the tone for the literary piece.  It influenced the plot (main events and actions) and characters (residents) in the story.  The setting of long-term isolation acted as an antagonist to the residents who were restricted access to information, like the Communist China.  Information only flowed through Miep and Mr. Kraler.  The setting also posted the conflict of the recent tensions between the residents by creating misunderstanding because information access was very restricted.

Setting is of great importance in a fictional, poetic, and prose work.  It influences the plots and characters.  It can act as an antagonist, post a conflict that characters need to resolve, or shed light upon characters. It can also present symbolic persons, objects, places, actions, or situations. Setting develops the plot into a more realistic form, resulting in more convincing characters.  By establishing mood, setting also helps the audience relate themselves to the characters in a story.

Setting can be categorized into place, time, and social environment.  In this short short, the setting can be analyzed into:

Place: Secret Annex

Time: Residents spend majority of their time in silence

Social Environment: Residents are unable to speak more than a whisper
