The main goal of the United Nations has been, ever since it was formed, to promote and keep peace around the world. This is why the fact that the U.N. sponsored elections in Korea in 1948 is a sign that peace in the peninsula was a priority in the years before the Korean Civil War.

Unfortunately, the U.N. was not succesful in its efforts, and the war broke out in 1950, and lasted until 1953, with a great loss of life, and the permanent division of the Korean Peninsula in two countries: North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union and China, of communist ideology, and South Korea, supported by the United States, and of capitalist ideology.
