When the plague arrived, people believed it to be a punishment of God. Therefore, they often turned to the Church for help. But since the priests and bishops could not actually offer a cure or even an explanation, the Catholic Church lost a lot of its influence and for many people, their view of the world changed drastically.

The Church was considered to be important in daily life for European Christians. When the plague struck in Europe in 1347, people saw it as a gods punishment, turned to their Church for help. The Church tried to cope with the plague, but its reputation suffered as a result when millions of people died. The Black Death contributed to the decline of faith in God and the Church by the people.
