The words that give the Lawn a sense of life and motion are:
The lawn started at the beach and ran towards the front door for a quarter-mile jumping over sun-dials and brick walls and burning gardens and finally when it reached the house drifting up the side in bright vines as though from the momentum of its run.

Notice the words, "jumping", "ran", and "drifting".
