In 525, Justinian married Theodora. Theodora was considered much lower class than him, but he loved her and made it happen anyways. She was very smart and was one of Justinian's closest supporters and advisors later on. Justinian took power of the Byzantine Empire in 527 when his uncle Justin, the current emperor, passed away. He died in 565, leaving no heir. His nephew, Justin II, became emperor.
