Puntuated Equilibrium is an evolutionary phenomenon in which the species undergo two different types of phases,
Stasis (slow) : This is the period when evolutionary change occurs very slowly in the species. The species accumulate mutations at random now. However, the effects of the mutations are are not so influential that it would cause drastic evolutionary change in the species.
Speciation (rapid) : Due to the accumulation of multiple mutations in the stasis period, some of the individuals belonging to the species develop certain phenotypes that are beneficial to them. These individuals with distinctly different phenotypes with respect to the other individuals can develop into a new species.
